Finding an image source is the first step towards having something to create from in collaging! Each image has a specific license agreement depending on how you use it though. Where and how you use the image matters! I’ll cover the general licenses you will come across on websites and which is preferred for your project! Are you looking to make a screensaver for personal use? Or create a tarot deck?

Make sure to check the terms of their license agreements, sometimes they can change!

License Basics

  • It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.

  • The owner of the image requires an additional license for you to use their work.

    Extended licenses are important for covering you legally in your projects.

    Each extended license is based on specific terms regarding

    • print runs

    • profit margin

    • project use / location

    The Extended License can be different across companies. Make sure to triple check the conditions of the images available on every web site.

  • Websites will provide images that are free for you to use (personal, commercial) but legally require you to attribute and cite the owner in your project.

    Be careful, many CC0 images can be with attribution.

  • Images are free to use in your projects

    The owner has waived their rights and has provided their work in Public Domain for all to use for any purpose.

    This covers unlimited profit and prints.

  • When you use an image, where you post it and how you use it matters!

    Websites will categorize these into 3 uses.

    Personal use is when the project is for you only. Your project does not promote or can be used for monetary gain. All projects for personal use are private and have strict legal terms & conditions! Generally this is for making art you print for yourself or on social media.

    Commercial use is when the project generates profit. This includes financial gain from advertising, marketing or promoting your products.
